Old Testament Plays

Hello!

We are very excited to announce the production of our Old Testament plays on Monday, November 14 at 2 P.M. in the 6th grade room. All are welcome to attend! We will be performing our own versions of the Creation story, the Tower of Babel, the Plagues of Egypt, and the Parting of the Red Sea. No R.S.V.P. required. If you are unable to attend, the plays will be posted on the blog pending the approval of all parents.

Off and Running!

We are off and running into a smooth, fun, enriching school year. We have completed our ITBS testing, gone on our first mini-field trip, and learned a whole lot of cool, interesting things in our first several weeks of school. Progress reports for first trimester went home this week, and most students are working very hard to stay on track until conferences! We will be busy, busy, busy until then!

Some important new things to know for October:

We have begun music classes (every Thursday after lunch). Most students are in choir class with Ms. Marchant - a few have continued with advanced violin or cello class with Mr. Javier.

College students from Mount St. Mary's College will be leading some enrichment activities that all junior high students will participate in this month. In the past, groups have created their own mummies, sewn their own pillows, and played games that children in past societies have played. It is a great opportunity for our students to interact with older students and learn standards-based content in hands-on ways.

The Student Council-sponsored Halloween Dance will be the Friday before Halloween. Students will not be able to wear costumes to school this day, but they can wear free dress if they purchase a ticket to the dance. The Halloween Parade will be on the actual day of Halloween, Monday, October 31st, and students may wear their costumes to school on this day.

Welcome Back!

Welcome to a new school year! I am excited and hopeful for what lies ahead of us. In addition to the great students coming from Ms. Fiori's class, we are lucky enough to have gotten several new students to our school this year, and our classroom dynamic suits us very well. Junior high is quite an adjustment for all students involved, but it is a challenge that we can all handle if we maintain our stellar focus and effort!

Please know that I am available for any help you might need in your child's adjustment to his/her classes and life in junior high. Casual check-ins and inquiries are welcome by e-mail (kabel@saintanneschool.com), while sensitive issues involving grades or behavior should be handled in person by conference. Happy New Year!, Hats for Haiti, Field Trip

It has been a great first two weeks back after Christmas break. Everyone jumped right back into the swing of things - we have had improved test scores and outstanding behavior. Well done!

A big change for the second half of the year in our schedule is that Music is now moving to Tuesdays, so 6th grade will have both Music and PE on Tuesdays and additional Social Studies/Religion time on Thursdays. This change is to accommodate our wonderful volunteer woodwind instructors from Westside Music Foundation, Dr. Debby How and Mrs. Emily Senchuk. The students have adapted well to this change, as they always do.

To raise money for the people of Haiti after the devastating earthquake they experienced, Saint Anne is having a "Hats for Haiti" event on Friday, January 22. Students can bring a donation of $1 (or more) to wear a hat at school. All proceeds will go to the Holy Childhood Foundation's efforts to provide resources to the Haitian people.

Next Thursday, January 21 6th grade will have a short field trip for lunch. At 11:30 AM students will walk across Colorado Avenue to Quizno's/La Salsa/Starbucks to buy lunch and eat together in the picnic area. Parent volunteers are welcome to join us if they would like. We will walk back to Saint Anne at 12:30 PM. This field trip is a reward for good behavior and was chosen by the class by vote. Students who purchase lunch at one of the above places should bring $5-10 for their food. If there is a student who would rather bring his/her own lunch to eat with us in the picnic area, that is perfectly fine. Students who do not have the permission slip signed will have to eat with another junior high class at school.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Report cards and ITBS Test results have been distributed. Keep your eye out for an announcement in the newsletter about 1st Quarter Honor Roll and Principal's Award ceremonies. Conferences went well last week and now we've got a nice four-day weekend to give thanks and enjoy our families and friends. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Peace, Miss Abel

Field Trip, Permission Slips

Our first class field trip is planned for this Friday, October 23. Thank you to our two parent volunteers who have agreed to help supervise our trip to the park! Permission slips can be expected to go home tomorrow (Oct. 20) and should be back by Thursday (Oct. 22). The students have permission to wear their normal uniform OR PE uniform on Friday. Everyone should have a sack lunch for our picnic.

*Important* There are still some missing permission slips that need to be completed by each student. (1) The Boys and Girls Club permission slip should be completed by each student - even if he or she doesn't typically stay after school for sports or day care. (2) The image release form which states whether or not permission is granted for each student's name, image, voice, and schoolwork to be released in conjunction with the school. It is absolutely necessary that each student return this form signed. (3) The 1st Quarter progress report. (4) The field trip permission slip.

ITBS, Field Trip

We are now officially finished with our Iowa Tests! The testing process went smoothly and we will get the results in about one month--right before the Parent/Teacher Conferences. Every student showed a great commitment to being especially well-rested and focused on these important testing days. Well done!

We have earned our first field trip of the school year, and the class would like to spend an afternoon in the park in this nice fall weather. Any parent who would like to earn service hours while helping to supervise a trip to the park, please contact me via e-mail or leave a message for me in the office. The day and time we go is flexible - we would like to go whenever works best for our volunteers!

First PTA Meeting, Music

The first PTA meeting of the year was very successful! Thanks very much to the 6th grade Room Parents, Alyson Langan and Ileana Gainey, and all parents who attended. One big topic of discussion was the role of each Saint Anne community member in the development of our school. There has been a lot of buzz about the great things at Saint Anne School lately thanks to our wonderful PTA, Support Council, and our Development Coordinator, Carol O'Day.

A very special part of 6th grade this year is our advanced woodwind music class, which will take place every Thursday from 2:00-3:00 PM. Students have already chosen between the flute, clarinet, and saxophone to play this year. Miss Abel will be bringing in her flute from her high school days to join in on the jam session!
